While there are obviously many elements to consider in the process, and therefore a multitude of design options, below is a brief overview of some of the most common types of exposure that nameplates face and the materials best suited for each.
Exposure to Heat:
Etched zinc nameplates are the ideal choice when exposure to high heat is a factor in your decision. On top of being highly heat resistant, etched zinc nameplates are highly popular because they can be rendered in nearly any shape with multiple colors and tight registration.
Exposure to UV Rays and/or Chemicals:
Printed aluminum and domed nameplates feature clear urethane doming that offers sterling protection from UV exposure, chemicals, salt, and other abrasive materials. As such, they are able to withstand the daily wear and tear of cleaning products and are therefore suitable for indoor or outdoor use. Doming also has a hardness of Shore D50 and an operating temperature of -40F to 140F.
Exposure to Grime, Wind, Moisture, etc.:
Injection molded plastic nameplates (and decorative bezels and faceplates) are the perfect option for nameplates exposed to myriad elements. Attractive three-dimensional copy will not be worn away by grime, dust, etc., but will stay vibrant and visible over time.
Indoor Exposure Only:
If your signage will only be displayed indoors (and with no exposure to moisture), then etched poly nameplatesare an excellent choice. Etched poly nameplates are rendered in crisp detail through painting, hot stamping, or screening; they are a great alternative to etched zinc nameplates because they can be made in small quantities but do not require tooling.
